What exactly is health coaching?
A health coach is like a personal health leader, guide, partner, and cheerleader, all wrapped in one. A GOOD health coach helps you implement nutrition and lifestyle changes YOU want to commit to.
My health coaching revolves around several important foundations.
What does a health coach do?
You know what you want. Or at least you think you know what you want. So what’s keeping you from getting there? I can help you get clear on what it is you want and identify the obstacles that keep you from getting there. And then, together, we will learn educational concepts and come up with a plan to move you in the direction of your goals.
As your health coach I will use our private sessions to educate, come up with a game plan, and create some accountability. In between sessions we will communicate as much as we need to keep you on path – emails, phone call, text messages, you name it.?
Health coaching isn’t about me telling you what to do. It’s about helping you figure out what you want to do, and then creating a plan to get there.
Benefits of health coaching.
Even when you know what you want and know what it is you need to do… change can be extremely difficult. When you have someone in your corner, that you know is there to support you, and when you know you have to show up for meetings and be accountable, it can make all the difference in the world.
I can provide:
- Accountability: Knowing that you have to check in with another person about your progress can give you the push you need to move forward.
- Encouragement: Health coaches act as cheerleaders to pick you up when you’re having a not-so-good day.
- Unconditional support: A health coach doesn’t judge your actions. They help you come to your own conclusions about what works and what doesn’t in reaching your goals.
What should you look for in a health coach.
If you’d like to try health coaching, ask your healthcare provider for a recommendation. You can also contact your health insurance to see if they cover the service and have a list of approved providers.
Choose someone who is a national board-certified health and wellness coach (NBC-HWC), says Coates. It indicates they’ve had proper training.
Setting and reaching health goals can be challenging. But health coaches can help you move past barriers. Switching to a healthier lifestyle can affect everything. With increased energy and motivation, you’ll be able to do more, be there for others and live life to the fullest.
Start with Looking at Ratings and Reviews.
Look for social proof! If others have had a great experience, chances are you will too. Look for good ratings (4.0 and higher), and look for detailed reviews that give a glimpse into what it is like to work with this person. Check out my success stories here.
Next, Ask Some Questions.
Does this person look the part?
This is a question you are asking yourself. But it’s extremely important. You want a nutritionist to look healthy, you want a mechanic to look dirty with big hands, and you want your health coach to look healthy and fit.
Is this your only job?
You want a health coach that is committed to the lifestyle – it’s all they freakin’ do. That means they are passionate about it. That also means they probably work all the time – working on themselves and working with clients. If they are part-time, they may be part-time with you! IFY (Information For You) – Health Coaching is ALL I do.
How are you going to work with me? What are you going to do to me and for me?
If a health coach goes right into everything he or she is going to do to you, like a sales pitch, move on. The FIRST response from a good health coach is a question right back at you, getting to know you better. A question such as “What are your goals? What do you want to see change? How do you think a health coach can help?”
Is this thing you’re asking me to do something you actually do?
If your health coach or potential health coach comes back with anything but yes, you may want to dig a little deeper.
A good health coach puts you first.
When you visit with a health coach, it should feel comfortable. You should feel heard. And you should feel in control.
